Water or aqua aerobics is the performance of aerobic exercise in water. Done mostly vertically and without swimming it is a type of resistance training. The classes focus on aerobic endurance, resistance training and creating an enjoyable atmosphere with music.

Exercising in water is also strength-training oriented due to the water resistance. Moving your body through the water creates a resistance that will activate muscle groups. Water aerobics can lead to a reduction in blood pressure and resting heart rate, which will improve health overall. It also helps to reduce lactic acid build up.

Sessions concentrate on working the muscles, loosening joints and improving flexibility. Regular aerobic activity will:

  • Lower your blood pressure if you are hypertensive.
  • Lower your triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
  • Lower your heart rate both at rest and during exercise.
  • Enable you to exercise longer with less effort and recover from exertion more quickly.
  • Help convert body fat to firm, lean tissue and to control body weight.
  • Delay ageing process.
  • Decrease your chance for lower back problems.
  • Reduce injury to muscles.
  • Increase your resistance to fatigue and you will have more energy.
  • Help you cope with stress and you will sleep better.
  • Increase your work capacity.
  • Prevent heart attack and cardiovascular diseases.

The extent of these benefits will depend on the intensity, frequency and duration of your fitness sessions.
